STUDIO C ARCHITECTS

A 7 story 20,000 sf. building contain 27 residential units with ground floor residential recreation area fronting the street side. The ground floor units include duplex with open cellar and direct back yard access. The top floor includes out door recreation areas and duplex unit fronting street side. All the units above 2nd floor will have its own private balcony from the bedroom. All living rooms have incorporate corner windows to enhance both daylighting and viewing. Front facade at the street line incorporate face bricks materials to connect and blend into contextual surrounding, the setback facade using contrast metal panel to introduce modern languages as background.

A mixed use 16 story 60,000 sf. building contain 80 residential unit with ground floor commercial retail. Honoring the corner of 8th Avenue and West 30th Street, a more modern design approach is used, flanking both sides of corner with stone materials to connect with existing context. Residential recreation amenities located at 2nd floor with both indoor and outdoor functions. Upper floor residences will have private terraces at the building setbacks. Each street and avenue front units will accompanied by balconies to have indoor and outdoor qualities for the residences.

Tucked between the Manhattan Bridge and the Williamsburg Bridge, the mixed-use tower at 2 Pike Street sits at a prominent location with three street frontage. The solid vertical core with circulation and mechanical support stands against the adjacent building and sets the proposed building apart. The ground floor serves as commercial retail space, and the second and third floor hosts a restaurant that transforms into banquet halls. The office tower rises above, leans against the Manhattan Bridge and faces towards the Williamsburg Bridge.

TRINITY PLACE TOWER

Located in a mixed use neighborhood, an existing 1 story warehouse is looking for opportunity to create vertical expansion for office and community facility use to diversify within the existing community. With bonus F.A.R. by accommodating community facility use within the building, we are able to create almost 200% more floor area on top of existing 1 story establishment. By conforming to the local zoning requirement, the 3-stories extension is setting back 30 feet from both street front, this created less direct impact along the existing street front and street wall context. The position of the new massing in relationship to the lot and existing neighbor context, helps to create the design solution for somethimg modern, contemporary but not intrusive. The new massing then was wrapped with full height glass curtain wall.

EAST WILLIAMSBURG DEVELOPMENT

The East Williamsburg Development is located on a 580,000SF site on by the Newtown Creek in Brooklyn, NYC. It is currently an industrial neighborhood that flourishes with the creative culture of local artists and musicians. With precedents such as the SOHO district and the DUMBO district in mind, the East Williamsburg Development aims to pursue its artistic culture unique to the neighborhood as the essence of its development strategy. Three towers arose from the site; one is dedicated as artist’s live-work studio and gallery spaces, another as transient hotel to accommodate those attracted to the local culture, and yet another tower as luxury condominium. Interwoven strips of commercial spaces and green recreational spaces bridge the three towers, and public plazas and marina activate the waterfront. The East Williamsburg Development aligns its design approach with New York City’s Vision 2020 plan to comprehensively improve the city’s waterfront. The development pursues a net zero site and source energy use and emissions by implementing energy reduction strategies such as ground-sourced heat exchange, daylight and solar control, and separate, distributed air supply and heating/cooling.

108 WEST 80TH STREET

Located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, one block away from the American Museum of Natural History and two blocks away from Central Park, this 1890 landmarked brownstone is retrofitted with a modern single-family house. The Renaissance Revival façade remains untouched, but the interior is completely gutted to retrofit a modern single-family home. The entrance at the first floor opens up to a grand, double-height parlor, and a hallway leads to the more private library space in the back of the house. The second floor to fourth floor hosts bedrooms each equipped with a full bathroom. Each floor includes a kitchen and shared common space. Above the existing brownstone, a two-story penthouse addition hosts the master suite. The service entrance at the garden level leads to a full kitchen. A hallway leads to the dining room that opens to the backyard for outdoor dining. The entertainment and fitness programs anchor the entire house underground, with a wine cellar, multimedia room, gym, racquet ball court, saunas, and a pool. The house is supported by a cantilevered stairs enclosed in continuous glass walls and a commercial elevator at the building’s core.

35-12 UNION STREET

The proposed building is located in a mid-density residential district in Flushing, New York. The existing streetscape is comprised of mixed-use establishments with commercial programs on the ground floor and residential units above. The proposed design continues the commercial streetscape in its base, and erects residential tower above. The residential tower covers only 60% of the given lot, which allows higher elevation for the residential units. The remaining 40% open space becomes roof terrace shared among residents. Living spaces face south to maximize solar gain, solid vertical cores and mechanical supports occupy the north to prevent winter wind invasion.

CHEN'S RESIDENCE

The Chen’s Residence is a 5,000 SF two family house. A main double-height vestibule is shared between the two families, one on the ground floor with access to cellar and backyard, and one on the second floor. Each unit include three bedrooms, one bathroom, and an open kitchen to the living room.

WEST SEAPORT HOTEL

A high-end hotel is proposed at a major seaport terminal on the west of Xiamen, China. The design challenge is to envelop the hotel and amenity programs in a form that does not obstruct the view of existing luxury residential towers inland. Given the parameters, Studio C proposed an “L” shape geometry, with the hotel program as the vertical mass and the amenity programs occupying the horizontal mass. The hotel is comprised of about 500 units, and the amenity programs include conference centers, ball rooms, restaurants, and retail spaces. All the public spaces with seatings are situated along the seaside to maximize the ocean view, while the commercial spaces are programmed along the roadside to activate pedestrian traffic. The seaside and roadside programs create an interwoven public circulation. The “node” at the junction of hotel lobby and amenity programs create a sense of arrival and departure, parallel to that insinuated by the seaport terminal.

XIAMEN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The objective of the Xiamen International Airport proposal is to achieve efficient passenger flow and local connectivity while creating a sense of belonging for travelers arriving and departing the city. Located in the northwest region of the Xiamen Island, the existing Terminal 1 building will be demolished and rebuilt. A parabolic cross section roof line sweeps across the complex in a single gesture. Diamond pleated skylights not only maximize natural light penetration but also denote program changes from public to private by regulating skylight sizes. Higher clearance departure area on the landside allows deep sunlight penetration from the glazing at the perimeters. The stacked multi-function belt contains utilities, airport operations, passenger services and retails. Elevated hold rooms overlook the entire airport field in a panoramic view. The pleated glass facade establishes a sense of scale in an urban perspective. An elevated bridge maintains a physical continuity to the existing Terminal 3.

NORTH SHORE GOLF RESORT

The North Shore Golf Resort is an existing international standard 18 holes golf course situated at the north tip of Taiwan, near a cliff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Visitors seeking relief from Taipei’s fast-paced and busy commotions are embraced with sea breeze, sunsets and golf with the expanse of the Pacific Ocean as backdrop. The design proposal integrates a 100-unit hotel with a golf club house to the existing resort. Living quarters are arranged along a single-loaded corridor that faces the open golf course. The hotel mass is elevated above the golf club and cantilevers towards the ocean. The club house hosts restaurants, banquet halls in the second floor, and lockers, café, and professional shop at the ground level. The back of house and service spaces are in the center core, and the service circulation is completely separate from the public circulation.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation requested for design proposals on an existing brownfield located in Queens, New York, that would facilitate business development in the local community. Studio C teamed up with a local developer to envision a fully functioning manufacture building and an accessory office building. The two detached entities are connected by a public plaza and sky bridges. The site is on a corner lot, with one façade facing existing residential buildings. In order to maintain contextual sensitivity to the residences, green walls and landscaping were implemented on the low-rise manufacture building to soften its industrial presence. Due to high water table at the site, all the parking requirement is satisfied on the roof of the manufacture building. The solar panel canopies are installed to provide shading for the roof deck parking.

The proposed mix-used building is on a site that was recently rezoned by the NYC Planning Department to promote commercial activities in downtown Flushing, NY. The faceted glass façade of the commercial office tower faces the major traffic street and marks the beginning of a commercial belt that veined throughout downtown Flushing. A centralized vertical core enables an all-around panoramic view for each floor. Shallow floor plates and higher floor to floor dimensions maximize natural light gain during the day time to reduce artificial lighting. This tower then sits on a porous plinth that interwove various community facilities and retail spaces to the existing urban context.

Situated in a residential neighborhood between the Whitestone Bridge and the Throgs Neck Bridge in Queens, NY, this single family home is an undertaking of the courtyard house typology in the New York City area. The owner requested an open courtyard that allows light penetration and blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces within the house. The allowable floor area is maximized to accommodate the client’s growing family. Upon entering the house, the visitor is engaged by a parlor overlooking the courtyard. A hallway leads into the more private dining room and kitchen. A stair leads to the second floor to two bedrooms, each with access to the roof terrace and equipped with a full bathroom. The master bedroom sits at the crown of the house on the third floor, with an open bedroom, walk-in closets, and a master bathroom. An open-air garden further obscures the interior and exterior threshold. The main courtyard brings natural light into the cellar that hosts the living room. A phantom car-lift on the ground floor garage lowers cars into the sub-cellar, where the client displays and stores his luxury car collection.

DE YANG HEALTH RESORT

Modeled after the traditional Chinese courtyard, the De Yang Health Resort receives its patrons in a tranquil Zen garden. Each wing surrounding the garden houses resort amenity programs, establishing uninterrupted physical and visual connections to nature for the occupants. The large roofs supported by columns allude to tree canopies in forests. Wood construction with glass was adopted to further enhance the immersive experience in nature. Beyond the main resort house, the continuing main axis is flanked by individual resort residences that take advantage of the site. The grounded dwellings are surrounded by reflecting pools, while the elevated dwellings stand on pilotis and level at the height of tree canopies.

WEST SEAPORT DEVELOPMENT

The West Seaport Development, located at the western waterfront of Xiamen, was conceived through various site conditions that contextualize its site planning. It is divided into three distinct zones. The promenade alludes to the ebb and flow of the waves and creates a dynamic pedestrian zone along the waterfront. Walkways interweaves local eateries and boutiques with landscaped niches of green spaces and water features. These paths lead the foot of Xiamen Bridge, where a marina offers rentable docks, restaurants, boat maintenance and a variety of recreational activities such as skiing, sailing, canoeing, and yachting. The residential towers are broken down into 3 undulating masses that maximize ocean views while avoid to be perceived as dauntingly massive. Sky bridges between each form maintain physical connectivity and provide cross-circulation for residents.

KINMEN RESORT

The Kinmen Resort is located at one of the few white sand beachfronts on Kinmen Island. The wings of double-loaded hotel towers tilt towards the ocean at about 20 degrees, providing all 800 living units with an ocean view. Upon entering the resort, the main axis through the gardens branch off to paths leading to hotel amenities of retails, conference centers, multi-purpose halls, restaurants, spas, and gyms. A difference of 10 meters in elevation became an opportunity to create a ‘waterfall’ experience, which brings the visitors trickle down from the “landside” to the “waterside”.

280 HENRY STREET

The development at 280 Henry Street is a mixed-use tower with commercial spaces and community facilities in its base, and residential units above. Parking spaces for the tower’s users are provided belowground. The residential tower swivels slightly to maximize natural light exposure and create different spaces for each unit.

FUJISUNWAH CAMPUS

The Fujisunwah Campus sits on a 500 hectors industrial land located at the Inner Mongolia province, near the city of Ordos. A public plaza engages visitors to a gallery exhibition center and a research & development building, with the head quarter operation center elevated above. Independent R&D facilities are arranged along lanes that branch out from the main roads. The manufacturing facilities are flanked right behind the R&D buildings as the main body of the operation.
